Pomodoro for ADHD: does it work, and how to make it stick
Why timers help this particular brain
A timed block changes the deal you're making with yourself. "Work on the report" is an open-ended commitment — threatening, unstartable. "45 minutes on the report, then a break" is bounded, and bounded is startable. The countdown also gives time a visible edge, which directly counteracts the time blindness that lets hours vanish. And the scheduled break legitimizes stopping, which paradoxically makes starting easier: you're never signing up for forever.
Where classic pomodoro loses ADHD users
- The 25/5 dogma. Twenty-five minutes can be too short — cutting off hyperfocus right as it arrives — or too long on a low-capacity day. Fixed intervals fit a fictional average brain.
- The "what is this timer for?" gap. A timer starts a block of time, not a task. If you still have to choose the task, the paralysis just relocated.
- Manual bookkeeping. Counting pomodoros, logging sessions, restarting timers — maintenance that quietly kills the habit.
Tuning intervals that actually fit
Treat work/break lengths as a setting to calibrate, not a virtue to uphold. Deep work that benefits from momentum: try 45–50 minute sessions with 10-minute breaks. Grinding or aversive tasks: drop to 20–25 minutes so each block stays trivially startable. Low-capacity days: shorter still — a completed short session beats an abandoned long one. Adjust until "one more session" feels plausible rather than heroic.
Focus sessions the GoodPlans way
GoodPlans bakes the timer into the schedule, which closes both remaining gaps at once. Work and break lengths are yours to set, and the scheduler slices your tasks into sessions of exactly that shape — so when a timer starts, it already knows what it's for. The current task and countdown run as a Live Activity on your lock screen, keeping the edge of the session visible without inviting you into your phone.
Sessions log themselves as you complete them, progress rolls up into each task automatically, and if a block gets skipped it reschedules in one tap. You get pomodoro's benefits — bounded starts, visible time, sanctioned breaks — with none of its clerical overhead.
Focus sessions, pre-decided
